About this section

This archive collects WhereGamble’s earlier articles on casino play: strategy explainers, game guides and pieces on how online gambling is treated in Australia. Newer writing, including short news items and long-form guides with sources, is published on the blog.

Articles here are kept online because the questions they answer have not changed. Where a law or a product has moved on, the newer blog post on the same subject takes precedence.

How to read the archive

Most of these pieces explain how a game works rather than how to win at it. Roulette, keno, blackjack and pokies all carry a house edge that is fixed by the rules of the game or by the return to player set by the studio, and no betting pattern changes it. A strategy article is useful when it tells you which bets cost least over time, how variance behaves in a short session, or how a feature such as a bonus round is triggered. It is not useful if it promises a way around the maths, and the articles here do not.

Some older articles refer to products, promotions or casinos as they stood when the piece was written. Bonus terms in particular change often, so check the current terms on the casino’s own site before you deposit. Our casino reviews and the bonus pages are the places where offers are tracked, and those pages carry their own update line.

The law in short

Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, online casino games and pokies may not be offered to people in Australia by Australian-licensed operators, while licensed wagering on racing and sport is permitted. The Australian Communications and Media Authority enforces the Act and publishes the list of offshore sites it has asked internet providers to block. Articles in this archive that discuss offshore casinos describe how they work; they are not a statement that playing at them is protected by Australian law. For the detail, see the blog posts on the ACMA block list and on BetStop, the national self-exclusion register.
