Are Online Pokies Legal in Australia?

Australian laws are complex concerning betting – Judicial legislation exists at both the national and state level. Broadly speaking, online betting is legal in AU but with a caveat: Australian companies cannot offer their residents online betting services. Therefore, AU players must go through offshore casinos with relevant licenses.

The Interactive Gambling Act of 2001 (IGA) is what mainly controls laws surrounding Australia’s online gambling. Casinos outside AU are not subject to Australian laws so they can legally offer their services to Australian players. Each Australian state and territory has its own regulatory body that is responsible for overseeing and enforcing gambling laws within its jurisdiction. These bodies also work with the Australian Federal Police and other law enforcement agencies to detect and prevent illegal gambling activities.

Therefore, you are allowed to play online pokies in Australia, so as long as the casino you’re playing at is licensed and regulated by a reputable offshore authority.

Some other laws that relate to online gambling in Australia include the Australian Communications and Media Authority Act 2005, which governs advertising of online gambling services, and the Financial Transactions Reports Act 1988, which requires financial institutions to report certain financial transactions, including those related to gambling.
